There are 37 Australian universities now ranked among the world’s best universities in the 2017/2018 edition of QS world university rankings, two more than last year. That is two more than last year’s edition. Seven of these are in the top 100, while a further ten are in the top 300. Below is the list of top 10 best Universities in Australia this year and information on each of them.

1. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY (ANU)

Australian National University is ranked 1st in Australia and 20th in the world moving two places this year. It is located in Canberra, the capital town of Australia. It is the only University to be created by the parliament of Australia. It has a population of over 25,000 students and counts 6 Nobel Laureates among it alumni and faculty. Amongst its alumni are two Australian Prime Ministers.

 

2. UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

The University of Melbourne is ranked joint 41st in the world this year alongside South Korea’s KAIST. It is the second oldest University in Australia founded in 1853. The university has around 47,000 students, including more 12,000 international students. Its alumni community includes four Australian Prime Ministers, and it is also been associated with nine Nobel Laureates – the most of any Australian university.

 

3. UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES (UNSW)

The University of New South Wales is ranked 45th in the world moving up four places and third in Australia. The UNSW, Sydney, was established in 1949. It is a founding member of the prestigious Group of Eight, a coalition of Australia Research universities. University of New South Wales is located in Sydney and has produced more millionaires than any other Australian university. The university is aiming to be “Australia’s Global University” by 2025. It is currently partnered with over 200 universities around the world.

 

4. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND (UQ)

The University of Queensland has also moved up this year into the top 50, and it is ranked joint 47th in the world. The University of Queensland is primarily located in the state capital of Brisbane. It’s another founding member of the Group of Eight and is renowned for research innovations, recently including vaccines to help prevent cervical cancer.

 

5. UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

University of Sydney is ranked 50th in the world, and 5th in Australia. It is Australia’s first University founded in 1850. Now hosting around 60,000 students. The university’s campus is noted for its beautiful neo-gothic buildings. It is also a member of the Group of Eight. It is popularly strong in the fields of Law, Education, Medicine, Accounting and Finance and offers the broadest range of programs than any other university in Australia.

 

6. MONASH UNIVERSITY

Located in Melbourne and founded in 1958, Monash university climbs five places this year to now rank 60th in the world. It is named after the prominent Australia general Sir John Monash, and has around 80,000 students currently enrolled of which 28,000 come from outside Australia. It is presently operating a Malaysia Campus as well as international centers in Italy, India and China.

 

7. UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA (UWA).

Founded in 1911 and located on the opposite side of Australia in Perth, it is the first university in Western Australia. The University of Western Australia also improved its position this year and now ranked in the global top 100. It is joint 93rd place in the world. A Group of Eight member. UWA’s campus is highly regarded for its beauty. It has about 24,000 students enrolled across nine faculties.

 

8. UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE

The University of Adelaide has move up 16 places to rank joint 109th in the world, it is the third-oldest Australian university, established in 1874. Another member of Group of Eight, the university has over 25,000 students. It has five campuses throughout the state of South Australia, as well as one campus in Singapore.

 

9. UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY (UTS)

The University of Technology, Sydney climbs 17 places to rank 176th in the world this year. It is a member of the Australian Technology Network, a group of five Australian universities with a heritage of working closely with industry. Despite its name, UTS has strengths in several non-technological subjects such as Nursing, Art and design, Sports and Law.

 

10. UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE

Up 21 places to now rank joint 224th in the world, the University Of Newcastle (UON) this year overtakes the University of Wollongong as Australia’s 10th highest ranked university. Established in 1965, UON is particularly well-regarded for the subjects of Mining Engineering, Architecture, Nursing and Sociology.
