4. Wilfredo Gomez vs Carlos Zarate
On October 28th, 1978 at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, WBC bantamweight champion Carlos Zarate, from Tepito, Distrito Federal, Mexico, challenged super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Gomez, from Las Monjas, Puerto Rico, for his WBC title. Both fighters were undefeated going in. Zarate’s record was 52-0, Gomez was 21-0, and the fight turned out to be everything it was cracked up to be.
The fight was stopped at :44 of the fifth when Gomez knocked Zarate down again and then viciously stepped in to land a straight right as Zarate crawled on his knees. Zarate’s corner threw in the towel even before Gibbs began the count. In the end, Zarate, a courageous warrior, wilted under the extreme pressure that Gomez applied. As soon as the towel was thrown, the celebration began!
